"No One Noticed" by The Marías // Song Review

It was featured as the eleventh track on The Marías' 2024 sophomore album, Submarine, which was one of my favorite new music discoveries from last year. "I remember just waking up one morning and sitting on my bed grabbing the guitar and just starting to play. The windows were open the birds, were chirping like it was just a beautiful morning I just started you know, playing guitar and then the melody and the lyrics just kind of came out all at once," the lead singer María Zardoya said in a deep-dive interview with Genius.
María's vocal performance is so stunning and ethereal, with such an airy quality to the song that makes you feel like you're floating while listening to it. The song was produced by bandmate Josh Conway and Gianluca Buccellati, and they did such an amazing job at translating the energy and depth into the song. The lyricism is simple, with the repetition of the same refrain throughout much of the song. She sings, "Come on, don't leave mе, it can't be that easy, babe, if you believe me, I guess I'll get on a plane, fly to your city, excited to see your face, hold me, console me, and then I'll leave without a trace".
At it's core, "No One Noticed" beautifully captures the essence of our universal need to find human connection, both physically and virtually. It is also a testament to the adaptability of a connection that is so magnetic it cannot be ignored. "At the end of the day, we just want connection. We just want to connect with a human being. Whether they're in the room, which is the most ideal scenario. You can like look at somebody's eyes and like touch them and really feed off of each other's body language," she continued in her in-depth breakdown of the song with Genius. "If that's not there, the next best thing is falling in love virtually. You know connecting by just words and connecting by a video, a FaceTime, you know something that's not present but can be just as tangible and just as real". Through its intimate storytelling, "No One Noticed" became an ode to the longing for closeness, whether it’s in the same room or digitally.
"'No One Noticed' taught me a lot about myself and the way that I like to make music," María continued in her interview with Genius. "It's also taught me a lot about the industry. At the end of the day, I just want to make music that I would want to listen to, music that like speaks to this gut instinctual feeling that I have and that I love to feel when I listen to music. It's kind of taught me that like follow that feeling. Everything else, all the chatter in the industry, everything else of like 'this is the hit' or 'this is what's going to work' - just forget about that put blinders on and just go with your feeling."
In that interview, she talked about feeling really passionate about the song from the moment she started writing it, but the label felt differently. They were looking for The Marías to make a more up-tempo song that would be catchy and radio friendly. Because of that, "No One Noticed" was put on the backburner for a while, until María herself leaked the song about a year later. The fans ended up finding it and really making this song all their own. "They just really gravitated towards it, which made me really happy because the song is called 'No One Noticed' and it kind of went through this iteration of like nobody noticing the song for what it was and me being like so upset about it. But then the fans noticed how special I thought it was so it like became our song. Then finally it made its way onto our album Submarine and then it really got noticed".
I also love the extended cuts of the song that were recently released as well, both the Spanish and English versions. It is such a dreamy and addictive song, as so much of Submarine is. The Marías is one of my favorite artists that I discovered in the past year and have absolutely loved diving into their beautiful work. "No One Noticed" particularly represents all of the qualities that makes their music so special.
Thanks for reading! Another track from Submarine by The Marías was featured on my favorite songs of 2024 list, be sure to check it out and more from my song of the week series here.
