"Party Favor / Hotline Bling" by Billie Eilish // exclusive 7" pink vinyl single from Interscope
This special "Party Favor / Hotline Bling" 7" vinyl single by Billie Eilish was originally released in April 2018 for Record Store Day, only being sold at independent record stores in the US. It was only limited to 2000 copies and has always been among the rarest records Billie has ever released. I missed out on the record the first time around all those years ago and have been waiting for the day they would repress this single so I could finally have it in my collection! In 2023, Interscope finally repressed a new variant of it for the first time and sold it exclusively on their website and Billie's webstore.
The new Interscope variant I have is slightly different than the first edition. Instead of the hot pink of the original, the second pressing is more of a pastel baby pink, which perfectly matches the cover art! The cover art with the illustration of Billie compliments the vibe of these two songs so well too.
Side A features the song "party favor", which was originally featured on Billie's debut EP don't smile at me from 2017. It is such a sweet, underrated gem in her discography. I really love to have that song in my collection on this format. I will always have a special place in my heart for the don't smile at me EP, as it was the first time I ever discovered Billie's music and have been obsessed with all of her work ever since. "party favor" is written in the style of her leaving a voicemail breaking up with her boyfriend on his birthday. "Stay and blah, blah, blah, you just want what you can't have," she sings. "And I hate to do this to you on your birthday, happy birthday, by the way, it's not you, it's me and all that other bullshit, you know that's bullshit, don't you, babe? I'm not your party favor".
As always, this song was written and produced solely by Billie and her brother Finneas. Billie was only about 15 years old when her debut EP with this song was released, while Finneas was only about 20 years old. It's incredible all that they were able to accomplish at such a young age and have only continued to get better as the years have gone on!
Side B features Billie's cover of "Hotline Bling" by Drake, which is only available on this vinyl. The official studio version isn't available on streaming outside of her SoundCloud, other than a short minute long interlude version she released last year called "hotline (edit)". It a very sweet and delicate rendition of the original version, which is a very cool take on the Drake classic. On her tour at the time, Billie would perform a mashup of "party favor" and "hotline bling" at all of her shows, so this also serves as a really special commemoration of some of her earliest performances.
