"One Kiss" by Dua Lipa & Calvin Harris // limited edition vinyl picture disc

"One Kiss" was one of Dua Lipa's first major worldwide hits, coming out shortly after her debut self-titled album was released in 2017. She now has several other massive hits, but it's so cool to be able to look back at this as an early foreshadowing of the superstar she would become in the following years. This song is in collaboration with Calvin Harris, who really dominated the dance pop market throughout the 2010's. This may be one of the best he has ever released. Dua and Calvin first met in 2015, soon after her first single "Be The One" was released. They didn't work together until two years later when he discovered a half-written song he had been working on that he thought Dua would sound great on. They recorded and finished writing the song together at his studio in Los Angeles while Dua was on her first US tour - and the rest is history!

This song topped the charts all of summer 2018 in the UK, spending eight weeks at number 1, the longest of both of their careers thus far. This marked Calvin Harris' ninth number 1 and Dua's second, following 2017's "New Rules". It also became the longest running chart-topping single by a female artist that decade, which is such an incredible accomplishment! In 2022, "One Kiss" was also certified quadruple platinum in the US, selling over 4 million copies since its release.

In 2018, this single was pressed on a limited edition 12" picture disc vinyl that was sold exclusively in the UK. I was so happy to find a copy of it in one of my favorite record stores for such a good price last summer. Since it was only available in the UK several years ago, it was definitely rare to have found this at a record store in Pennsylvania! I have been wanting to add it to my collection for years and I was so happy to have found it randomly that day!

I love the campy design of the disc, the photos are so vibrant and compliments the aesthetic of the music video so well. I tried to emulate some of that kitschy green screen style with the photos throughout this post too. I love that this also came with a picture sleeve too, which is somewhat rare for picture discs to come with anything other than a clear plastic sleeve. Side A has a photo of Dua on it with the standard version of the track. Side B has a photo of Calvin Harris, with a special extended version of "One Kiss" featured on it. I love the extended version of the song too, as it further elevates the magic of the original and expands upon the incredible production.

It largely draws from dance, Euro-pop and house influences, while also exuding the perfect light summer-time tropical vibes. One thing that is always guaranteed from both Dua and Calvin is that they will always make the most fun, summery pop hits! I always return to it this time of year and has been the soundtrack of my summer for many years now.

"One Kiss" was released as a stand-alone single, but was later included on a deluxe edition of Dua's debut album too. They collaborated again in 2022 on a song called "Potion", which also featured Young Thug. That is such a great follow up to "One Kiss", and one of the most underrated gems in both of their discographies. I would love to hear them collaborate again one day, as they have always made nothing but pure bops together over the years!
