MET GALA 2023 // BEST DRESSED
It's the first Monday in May, which means it is fashion's biggest night out at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Met Gala! The theme this year is "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" celebrating the life and career of the late Karl Lagerfeld, best known for his 65 year career as a designer for some of the most renowned and iconic fashion houses in the world - Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi and his own eponymous label. However, he is best known for being the creative director of Chanel from 1983 to his death in 2019. During that time he completely transformed the brand into one of the most recognizable fashion houses in the world and influenced generations of designers to come.
The Met Gala is the opening night of the museum's exhibit, which the Metropolitan Museum of Art says; "...spotlights Lagerfeld’s unique working methodology, focusing on the late designer’s stylistic vocabulary as it was expressed in “through lines”—aesthetic and conceptual themes that appear time and again—in his fashions from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019. More than 200 objects are on display, and Lagerfeld’s sketches accompany most of the pieces, underscoring his complex creative process and collaborative relationships with his premières d’atelier." It is on display from May 5-July 16, 2023. I have been to every Costume Institute exhibition at The Met for the past 5 years and it is always an incredible experience to see all of the stunning pieces of fashion history in person. I am looking forward to going to this exhibit soon and if you ever have the chance to go to the museum, I cannot recommend it enough! In 2021 and 2022, The Met's Costume Institute hosted its first two-part exhibition with the theme of American fashion. Part one, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” opened in September 2021 after a year-long hiatus due to the pandemic, and “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” opened in May 2022.
Many guests followed the theme closer than previous years, the majority seemed to be inspired by a recognizable motif of Chanel, through the eyes of other brands and designers. Of course there was a lot of black and white, as well as tweed, pearls, chains, chiffon, camellia flowers, and quilted patterns.
Others like Doja Cat and Jared Leto took a different approach and paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld's beloved cat, Choupette. Doja Cat's couture look was actually so well done, she wore prosthetic cat makeup and a beautiful silver gown designed by Oscar De La Renta. Jared Leto's look was also designed by Oscar De La Renta, but was a much different approach, wearing a full animal suit with a black diamond-encrusted outfit underneath. They both always take a more camp approach to their red carpet fashion and this may have been some of their most outlandish yet!
I always love seeing all of the creativity and artistry that goes into the designs for this event, here's some of my favorites!

Many others paid homage by wearing specific archival collections that Karl designed. Dua Lipa was my favorite of the night, she wore a vintage Chanel 1995-96 wedding gown first made famous by Claudia Shiffer on the runway. It is such a beautiful gown, one that captures the theme and Dua's personal style so perfectly. She also wore a stunning Tiffany & Co. diamond necklace that is over 100 carats and is reminiscent of the shape of the iconic yellow Tiffany diamond. Cardi B, Gigi Hadid, and Rihanna also never disappoint when it comes to their Met Gala fashion and this year is no exception. Their approach to this year's theme was perfect and so elegant. They are almost always guaranteed to be at the top of my best dressed lists!
