The Best Songs of January 2023 // New Music Friday!
Happy New Year! To kick off 2023, this is a list of my favorite songs released in the past month.
"Flowers" // Miley Cyrus
New year, new Miley! She is back and better than ever with the first single off of her highly anticipated eighth album, Endless Summer Vacation. "Flowers" is an empowering anthem of self-love, with a melody and chorus that is so infectious. It has more of a disco sound to it in comparison to Plastic Hearts' 80's glam rock sound. Miley is an artist that is always evolving and reinventing her sound with each new release, so I'm really looking forward to hearing what she has in store for the rest of the album!

"OWN MY MIND" // Måneskin
The opening track of Måneskin's latest album, RUSH!, is the best song I have heard from them yet. This is one of the stand-out moments from the album where they seem to be at their most confident in what they want the sound of the band to be. "OWN MY MIND" is one of the tracks I have continuously returned to since I first heard it. It reminds me so much of "R U Mine?" by Arctic Monkeys, which is one of my favorite songs ever and probably why I gravitate to this one so much too. This song showcases the best version of the band and all of the potential they have.
"C'est Comme Ça" // Paramore
I love the direction Paramore has been going in with the singles leading up to their upcoming album, This Is Why. It feels like such a fun and fresh sound for them that I can't wait to hear more of!

"Regret Me" // Daisy Jones & The Six
Daisy Jones & The Six was once only just a fictional 1970s rock band from the mind of author Taylor Jenkins Reid, but now they are officially coming to life with the upcoming adaptation of the book on Amazon Prime. Along with the release of the series in March, they are also releasing a full album called Aurora, but until then "Regret Me" gives the first glimpse into their sound. I loved reading the Daisy Jones & The Six book - along with the rest of Taylor Jenkins Reid's work - so this is really such a unique musical experience!
"Tropic Morning News" // The National
"Tropic Morning News" has such an upbeat and joyful, yet melancholic feeling to it. Something about this song also gives me such a feeling of nostalgia, as if I've been listening to it for years. I'm not too familiar with a lot of The National's previous work, but I loved all of the work Aaron Dessner has done with Taylor Swift since 2020's Folklore and Evermore albums, as well as the band's feature on "coney island". I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of their upcoming album, as well as diving into their past releases!
"Emily I'm Sorry" // boygenius
Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker released three singles alongside the announcement of their band's highly anticipated debut album, the record - all of which are great and showcase their individual musical styles. "Emily, I'm Sorry" is my favorite and the most reminiscent of Phoebe's usual sound, especially with some connections to her Punisher album. There are so many lyrics on this song that are heartbreakingly beautiful.
In 2023, I plan to focus mostly on writing music content, so if you have any suggestions or posts you'd like to see be sure to let me know! Thanks for reading, I would love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below!
